Meta Connect 2026: What to Watch on September 23
Meta Connect is scheduled for September 23-24, 2026 in Menlo Park. For most people it is a gadget keynote. For anyone positioning around this market, it is the single highest-information hour of the year, because platform owners announce distribution changes at keynotes, and distribution changes are what turn a device into an economy.
Here is what to actually watch, ranked by how much each would change your plans. Everything below is either scheduled, reported, or clearly labelled as speculation.
1. App publishing going generally available (the one that matters)
Meta's Wearables Device Access Toolkit has been in developer preview, with Meta's own materials pointing to broader publishing in 2026. If Connect is where that opens, it is the closest thing this market has had to an App Store moment: millions of devices, a real distribution channel, and almost no incumbents.
What it would mean: the builder window stops being theoretical. History from 2008 says the first useful apps in an empty store capture attention that later costs a marketing budget. If you have been putting off learning the stack, this is the announcement that converts that delay into a measurable cost.
Watch for: wording like "publish to all users", store listings, review processes, or a developer portal opening beyond preview.
2. New hardware, and the price of the entry tier
Reporting points to a next generation of Ray-Ban Meta glasses, with codenames circulating (Aperol and Bellini) and expected upgrades to camera quality and assistant battery life. Treat specifics as rumour until the stage lights are on.
The number to actually note is not the flagship price. It is the bottom of the ladder. Meta already put a self-branded line at $299 in June. If the entry price moves again, the installed base grows faster than every forecast currently assumes, and every downstream business (content, accessories, apps, services) gets a bigger market for free.
3. Assistant capabilities
Every device in this category ships with an AI assistant, and the assistant is the interface. Watch for what it can newly see, remember, or do on your behalf, and for whether third parties get to plug into it. An assistant that can act inside other people's apps is a different product from one that answers questions, and it opens a services market that does not exist today.
4. Anything about advertising
The first official advertising surface for glasses would mark the start of the phase where an entire services industry forms around it: campaign specialists, creative production, measurement. It is unlikely this year. If it happens anyway, it is the loudest possible signal that the mainstream phase arrived early.
How to watch a keynote like an operator
Fans watch keynotes for products. Operators watch them for permission changes: what became possible for people outside the company that was not possible the day before. Three questions, in order:
- Did distribution open, widen, or get a date?
- Did the cost of entry for buyers drop?
- Did anything become buildable, sellable, or serviceable by outsiders?
If the answer to all three is no, it was a good show and a quiet day for your plans. If any answer is yes, the correct response is to move within days, not months, because the window between an announcement and a crowded market is measured in weeks.
Context for the numbers
For reference while you watch: Meta sold roughly 7 million pairs of Ray-Ban smart glasses in 2025 (Counterpoint Research), holds 69.2% of the smart glasses market as of Q1 2026 with later estimates running higher, and AR display glasses are forecast to grow 154% this year (IDC). The category grew while VR headsets cooled, which is the pattern that makes this keynote worth an hour of your time.
We will update this post after the keynote with what actually shipped, and what each announcement changes.
